Grade Work

Creating a gentle slope in the yard is a process known as grading. It’s done to adjust the grade of the lawn so that rainwater and other moisture can be diverted from the base of the home. The desired grade is usually about 5%, meaning the ground 10 feet from the foundation should be 6 inches lower than the ground near the house.

Generally, slopes between 3% and 25% are thought to be satisfactory. If your yard’s grade is below 3%, or if its current grade doesn’t lead precipitation away from the house, it could require regrading. An incline higher than 25% can lead to erosion and sometimes necessitates a different method, known as landscape grading.

Grade Work can help with the following issues:

  • Pests like mosquitoes congregating in pools of water

  • Lawns that are overly moist and sodden

  • Steps and walkways that become muddy and tracked indoors
  • Widespread soil erosion
  • Trees, shrubbery, and vegetation being deprived of oxygen and succumbing to root rot
  • Uneven mowing patterns and dips in the soil
  • Accumulation of ice during the cold season
