Grade Work
Creating a gentle slope in the yard is a process known as grading. It’s done to adjust the grade of the lawn so that rainwater and other moisture can be diverted from the base of the home. The desired grade is usually about 5%, meaning the ground 10 feet from the foundation should be 6 inches lower than the ground near the house.
Generally, slopes between 3% and 25% are thought to be satisfactory. If your yard’s grade is below 3%, or if its current grade doesn’t lead precipitation away from the house, it could require regrading. An incline higher than 25% can lead to erosion and sometimes necessitates a different method, known as landscape grading.
